On Saturday, December 19, 2009, the Greater Tampa Sertoma Club played Santa and brightened the holidays for one lucky Bolesta family. Every year, Club members pick a family to benefit from their generosity. What a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of one family! The sad fact is that having a child who is deaf or hard of hearing can place a financial burden on a family that is insurmountable. Consider:
- It is estimated that the lifetime costs for all people with hearing loss who were born in 2000 will total $2.1 billion (citation).
- Direct nonmedical expenses, such as home modifications and special education, make up 30% of the costs (citation).
- The average lifetime cost for one person with hearing loss is estimated to be $417,000. This represents costs over and above those experienced by a person who does not have a disability (citation).
The generosity that the Greater Tampa Sertoma Club demonstrates goes a long way toward easing the financial burden our families experience as they work toward teaching their children to learn to listen and speak. Thanks Sertoma!
