Greater Tampa Sertoma Club Makes the Holidays Special

On Saturday, December 19, 2009, the Greater Tampa Sertoma Club played Santa and brightened the holidays for one lucky Bolesta family.  Every year, Club members pick a family to benefit from their generosity.  What a wonderful way to make a difference in the lives of one family!  The sad fact is that having a child who is deaf or hard of hearing can place a financial burden on a family that is insurmountable.  Consider:

  • It is estimated that the lifetime costs for all people with hearing loss who were born in 2000 will total $2.1 billion (citation).
  • Direct nonmedical expenses, such as home modifications and special education, make up 30% of the costs (citation).
  • The average lifetime cost for one person with hearing loss is estimated to be $417,000.  This represents costs over and above those experienced by a person who does not have a disability (citation).

The generosity that the Greater Tampa Sertoma Club demonstrates goes a long way toward easing the financial burden our families experience as they work toward teaching their children to learn to listen and speak.  Thanks Sertoma!

What does “silent night” mean to you?  For those of us who are hearing, we can’t imagine a truly silent night.  But for a child with hearing loss, silence might mean not being able to participate fully in all the activities their hearing peers enjoy.  Here at Bolesta, our kids don’t know that- because they can go to regular schools, in regular classrooms; play sports; go to the college of their choice; build careers that are productive and personally fulfilling; in other words- they can enjoy lives with no limitations.

This is the result one achieves when today’s technology- either cochlear implants or digital hearing aids, is combined with the specialized Listening and Spoken Language therapy such as Bolesta provides along with the support of our donors- all of whom make it possible for us to fulfill this critical mission.

Silent Night is Bolesta’s annual appeal for philanthropic support.  I hope you will help us meet our contribution goal so we can continue to help every child who comes through our doors.  Don’t make it a “silent night” for our kids, help us make it a joyous, bright, noisy night- by bringing the gift of listening and speaking to all kids who can benefit.

P.S. Making a gift is easy- just click here.  Our kids appreciate your efforts to fill their world with sound!
